The preliminary round for the Gazette coverage area wrestlers was a superb one. The quarterfinals was a completely different story.
The Chestnut Ridge Lions moved 10 of the 13 grapplers they took to Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday to the quarterfinals.
It was an up and down District 5- AA Tournament for the Bedford County wrestlers, but in the end, the county advanced 25 wrestlers to the Southwest Regional Tournament next weekend at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The Chestnut Ridge wrestling squad secured the Sideling Hill League title in a 60-12 win over Southern Huntingdon, Tuesday.
HOPE for Hyndman took advantage of three forfeits and won all three of the bouts wrestled to top Conemaugh Township, 35-12, Tuesday.
While the teams from the Bedford Gazette coverage area not named Chestnut Ridge were not in the hunt for the team title, 14 wrestlers from those schools placed at the tournament including a runner-up.
Northern Bedford had five place, Everett had four, Bedford had three, and HOPE for Hyndman and Tussey Mountain each had one. Ridge had 10 place.
HOPE for Hyndman's Brian Dawson made his first time in the Thomas Chevrolet Tournament a memorable one.
On Friday, the Hornet senior picked up his 100th win over a familiar foe, Bedford's Mat Emerick. The two grew up together and know one another like they were family.
